If you were to talk to any middle or high school student who has recently attended Illuminate, our student ministry, you would quickly hear about a Jesus loving and crazy dancing man named Oliver Wong. Oliver has recently stepped in as our Interim Student Pastor, and in his short time with us thus far, he has brought great excitement and fun to equipping students to be and make disciples. At CITYLIGHTS, Oliver also serves as a guest teacher on Sundays and in our Equipping Environments. Read on to know more about Oliver…
Sidney: Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Oliver: Hey hey! I'm Oliver Wong and my wife is Kyra. We are high school sweethearts and have been married for 10 wonderful years. Our children are Rose, Leo, and Alec. I have worked with youth almost all my life, teaching at Southside High School, and youth pastoring at Bridgeway Church. I feel a special calling to the local church, families, and the next generation.
Sidney: How did you get to Greenville and CITYLIGHTS?
Oliver: Kyra and I have lived in Greenville since we were married in 2005. Last Spring Kyra and I were looking for a new church and Chris invited us to visit CITYLIGHTS. The last year has been a refreshing time of rest and dreaming.
Sidney: What is something God is currently teaching you?
Oliver: This season God has been teaching me about the rhythm of rest and work. I find that Jesus is slower and less hurried than most people I know yet brought forth more long-term fruit than anyone in history!
Sidney: Why do you feel God has called you to work with students?
Oliver: I was led to a relationship with Jesus while in High School. Almost 20 years later that decision the most significant and foundational choice I've made in my life. I believe that God is always speaking, and always calling young people to himself. My heart is to help students to hear the voice of their loving, caring, powerful, joyful, peaceful Father and step into his life through the sacrifice of his Son!
Sidney: When you are not hanging out with middle and high school students, what do you like to do?
Oliver: I love to play basketball and tennis. I'm a huge movie buff, and I also love playing guitar whenever I get time.
Sidney: What is your favorite food?
Sidney: If you could only listen to 1 song the rest of your life, what would it be?
Oliver: One Thing Remains by Jesus Culture
Sidney: Besides the bible, what book has impacted you the most?
Oliver: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People - every family, leadership, and life book points back to that book for me.
Sidney: What are you most looking forward to as the Interim Student Pastor?
Oliver: Growing in relationship and family with leaders and students.
Illuminate meets on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:00 PM, and students, we would love to see you there! If you have any questions about our student ministry or would like to become a mentor you can click here or email Oliver at firstname.lastname@example.org.
