Amy Chastain joined the CITYLIGHTS staff earlier this year as director of our CITYKIDS and LittleLIGHTS children's environments. If you have kids, they are in good hands at CITYLIGHTS! Read on to learn more about Amy...
AUSTIN: Where are you from?
AMY: I’m from Greenville, SC. I’ve lived in Pelzer, SC most of my life. It’s a tiny little town between Piedmont and Anderson.
AUSTIN: What is your personal salvation story?
AMY: I was saved when I was seven years old at Vacation Bible School.
AUSTIN: How did you feel God's call to children’s ministry?
AMY: Well, I have always loved working with kids. I went to school for Early Childhood and Elementary Education, but almost immediately after graduation I just knew that I didn’t want to have a classroom of my own. The Lord had just completely taken that desire away. I didn’t know why and I honestly wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do, but I knew that the Lord’s timing was perfect and sometimes you just have to wait.
Two years later, I was meeting with my small group, and Jerushah Armfield told me that CITYLIGHTS was looking for a new Children’s Ministry Director. I just felt like this was it for me. I immediately felt called to this job. It combined my passion for working with kids and my passion for my church and being able to share Jesus with kids. In college, the idea of not being allowed to talk to students about my faith and encouraging their’s never felt right. It was always so normal to me to be able to share my faith. This opportunity was an amazing combination.
AUSTIN: What is a passage of Scripture that you have most identified with in your relationship with Christ?
AMY: John 16:33: "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
AUSTIN: What are some of your hobbies when you are not doing ministry?
AMY: I love to read, bake, watch Netflix :) and hang out with my family and friends.
AUSTIN: What is the last book you have read?
AMY: Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers
AUSTIN: In working with CITYLIGHTS so far, what is your favorite experience or moment?
AMY: I have really loved getting build relationships with the volunteers who work with the kids so faithfully each week. They are awesome!
AUSTIN: What is one thing you would like to inform parents about CITYkids and LittleLights?
AMY: Hmm, it’s hard to whittle it down to one thing. 1) The volunteers and I are super committed to serving the children and families of CITYLIGHTS by sharing Christ with them every Sunday morning. 2) With our new curriculum comes a really cool app that parents can download (it’s $1.99 in the App Store). It has videos, songs, devotionals, etc. for parents to use with kids during the week. It’s especially cool if a child misses a Sunday but they don’t want to miss out on anything! It is also an awesome way for parents to know what the kids are learning each week.
