Resonate is a Wednesday night gathering for College & 20′s.
After five years of meeting weekly on Wednesday nights in the environment that became known as Resonate – we believe that the day has come where Resonate needs to be different moving forward. Goodness, this ministry has been one of the most special movements I’ve led and have been apart of in all the years I have been in full-time ministry. I could go on and on and share about the lives that God has changed over the last five or so years – the stories seem endless. Much of who we are as CITYLIGHTS has been shaped by what Resonate did and why we started Resonate in a basement of a house so many years ago. Fellowship Greenville observed and studied what God was doing at Resonate (2012) and decided to launch CITYLIGHTS out of this ministry, hoping CL would mirror the God focus and the ability to reach people in ways that other churches couldn’t. FG’s hope was that we could launch a Church that could do what Resonate was doing in connecting and encouraging a generation of people and possibly accomplish the greater commissioning of THE church – equipping multiple generations of people to be and make disciples. Something you may not know is that the weekly environment of Resonate wasn’t really supposed to continue; the Resonate weekly environment was supposed to become the weekly environment of CL, and disciple making would be the primary other focus of the church and staff. However, the early planting team decided to try to do both of these environments. This has been good and has produced much good fruit. However, as we (the elders and pastors and other staff and key leaders) have listened to God and sharpened our focus across the board at CL we believe that continuing to pull off a weekly environment like Resonate isn’t where God is asking us to pour out our resources and time. BUT we absolutely desire to connect with the people of Resonate in a more direct way of equipping to be and make disciples.
Moving forward we desire to come along side of you in a closer and more intentional way. You will find several opportunities as the new year unfolds to be equipped in your following of Jesus. We hope that over this next season we will more confidently step into our role as followers of Jesus who are making followers of Jesus. Our Sunday morning environments will continue to provide an opportunity for you to exalt Jesus in a participatory way, much like we have enjoyed at Resonate over the years. As the year turns, you will also discover “learning environments” and CITYgroups with a missionally-minded focus as equipping gatherings to help you take your next steps in following Jesus.
In short we believe the local Church exists to make disciples who make disciples wherever they are. Consumerism had dominated local church culture and “christians” have been produced as a result. However, Jesus did not come to make christians, He came to make disciples. Interestingly, the word “christian” is found 3 times in the bible; yet, the word “disciple” is found 269 times. We are led into this reality from the examples from scripture and from historical and contemporary followers of Jesus, like Dietrich Bonhoeffer who was martyred for his faith and wrote “Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.” Mike Breen, thinking on the same lines, says, “If there’s anything any of us should become great at, it’s making disciples who can make disciples. Every disciple disciples. You can’t be a disciple if you aren’t willing to invest in and disciple others. If you make disciples, you always get the church. But if you make a church, you rarely get disciples.”
